Payload is an open-source, code-first CMS written in TypeScript. It installs straight into a Next.js app, so content, API and front end ship together.

Overview

Payload defines collections, fields and access control in TypeScript config. Since version 3 it runs natively inside a Next.js app, which removes a separate CMS server from the stack.

Strengths

  • Fully typed config and generated types end to end.
  • Runs inside Next.js; one deploy for site and CMS.
  • Flexible hooks and access control in code.
  • MIT-licensed open source.

Watch out for

  • Built for developers; non-technical teams need a dev partner.
  • No built-in AI suite.
  • Smaller ecosystem than Strapi or Contentful.
