Describe a site, get a design, then keep editing it with AI. We ranked five visual builders on how well their AI designs, refines and hands back a site you control.

The short version
Splitleaf is the best CMS for AI design: its agent edits real files, shows every change for review and uses your own AI plan or key, so there are no credits to run out of. Framer produces the most polished first draft from a prompt. Webflow is the pick when AI should assist a designer who already works in a visual builder.
Top pickSplitleaf
Desktop visual CMS that keeps your site as files, with AI built in
Best for: Freelancers and agencies who want AI to design fast but need to review and own the result
Figma-style canvas that publishes straight to a hosted site
Best for: Designers and founders who want a striking marketing site launched fast
Mature hosted visual designer and CMS in the browser
Best for: Designers who already work in Webflow and want AI to speed up the routine parts
All-in-one hosted website builder with business tools
Best for: Small businesses that want an AI-built site with store and bookings in one account
Template-led hosted website builder with commerce
Best for: Creators and small businesses who want a polished template with a light AI start
Splitleaf Desktop visual CMS that keeps your site as files, with AI built in
Splitleaf ranks first because its AI works on the actual site: it edits pages, styles and content as files, then stages every change for you to keep or discard. It runs on your own Claude plan or API key, so there are no credits to run out of. Its first drafts are less showy than Framer's.
Score breakdown
Strengths
Watch out for
Most AI builders generate a site and hide the result inside their platform. Splitleaf's agent edits the same HTML, CSS and CMS files you would edit by hand, and shows each change in a review list. You keep what is good and discard the rest.
You can ask for a new section, a restyle or a whole page, then adjust it in the visual designer next to the chat. Because the AI follows your design tokens and existing classes, follow-up edits stay consistent with the rest of the site.
It does not offer a one-click, fully styled site from a single sentence the way Framer does, and editing happens in the desktop app rather than a browser.
Framer Figma-style canvas that publishes straight to a hosted site
Framer produces the best-looking site from a short prompt, with strong typography, spacing and motion that feel designed rather than templated. It is also a full canvas editor for the follow-up work. The site stays inside Framer, and heavy AI use burns through monthly credits.
Score breakdown
Strengths
Watch out for
Framer is where a prompt gets the closest to a finished, good-looking page. Because the AI builds on the same canvas designers use, you can take over by hand at any point.
Follow-up prompts work well for restyling sections and changing layouts, and the visual editor is fast for fine-tuning. Credits are the constraint: a few generations and revisions can use a large share of the monthly allowance.
You cannot take the site away as files, and you cannot choose which AI model does the work.
Webflow Mature hosted visual designer and CMS in the browser
Webflow's AI sits on top of a mature visual builder, so what it generates is real, structured, responsive markup you can refine with full design controls. The output is less striking than Framer's and AI is metered by credits, but the foundation is the strongest of the hosted builders.
Score breakdown
Strengths
Watch out for
Webflow treats AI as an assistant inside a professional tool. The result is a site that behaves like any other Webflow project, which is good for quality and for handing work to a team.
Prompts get you a structured starting point, and you refine it with the usual style panel and CMS. The learning curve is the same as ever, so non-designers may prefer a simpler builder.
The included credits are small, and the site stays on Webflow's platform.
Wix All-in-one hosted website builder with business tools
Wix gets a non-designer from a short brief to a working site with business tools already attached. The AI is easy to use and good at the basics. Designs lean generic, refinement options are narrower than in Framer or Webflow, and AI use is capped by credits.
Score breakdown
Strengths
Watch out for
Wix is the most approachable option here. You answer a few questions or write a brief, and you get a site plus the business features most small companies need.
AI handles text, images and layout suggestions well enough for a first version. Precise design changes take more manual work than on the higher-ranked builders.
You cannot export the site, and designs tend to look like other Wix sites.
Squarespace Template-led hosted website builder with commerce
Squarespace pairs strong templates with an AI that sets up a starting site from a few answers. That start looks tidy, but the AI does less once the site exists, and its shared credit balance is the tightest of the five, especially on lower plans.
Score breakdown
Strengths
Watch out for
Squarespace's strength is its design system, not its AI. The assistant gets you to a decent starting point quickly, and the templates do the rest.
Once the site exists, most changes are manual. With a small credit balance on lower plans, you will not iterate with AI the way you can elsewhere.
Credits run out quickly, and the platform is closed, with no way to take the site as files.

It is a website platform where AI does part of the design work: generating pages from a prompt, restyling sections and changing layouts on request. The CMS part keeps your content editable afterwards.
For the best first draft from a prompt, Framer is hard to beat. For the best overall experience across generating, refining and owning the result, Splitleaf ranks first in our scoring.
Mostly yes. Framer, Webflow, Wix and Squarespace all meter AI with credits that reset monthly or are sold in packs. Splitleaf runs on your own Claude plan or API key, so you pay your AI provider directly.
It can replace the blank page and many routine edits. A designer still decides the brand, the structure and what to throw away, and the best tools here keep that person in control.
We looked at what designers and founders actually ask AI to do: turn a brief into a site, make it look good, and keep changing it afterwards. Every platform is scored from 0 to 5 on five criteria.
The overall score is the weighted average of the five.
