TYPO3

Open source CMS for large multi-site, multi-language sites

/ 5

Our score

TYPO3 is a free, open source CMS released under the GPL v2 and run by a non-profit community. It is self-hosted and built for multi-site and multi-language sites. Most teams build and run it with a developer or agency partner.

Overview

TYPO3 was first authored by Kasper Skarhoj in 1997, and the first release followed in 1998. It is open source under the GNU GPL v2. A volunteer community, the not-for-profit TYPO3 Association and a service company, TYPO3 GmbH, govern the project. TYPO3 GmbH does not offer agency services.

You download TYPO3 or install it with Composer and run it on your own server. It has built-in localisation, user privileges and roles, and it can run several sites from one installation. Developers need to work with TypoScript to configure it. Each LTS version gets free bug fixes and security updates for a fixed period. The current LTS is TYPO3 14, which needs PHP 8.2 to 8.5.

Strengths

  • Seven years of support per LTS version: three free, plus up to four more with paid ELTS.
  • Multi-language localisation and user privileges and roles are built in.
  • Runs several sites from one installation.
  • Non-profit governance, and a recognised Digital Public Good since April 2025.

Watch out for

  • Developers need to work intensively with TypoScript, so the learning curve is steep.
  • Free support windows are fixed. Older versions need paid ELTS.
  • No vendor-run SaaS. Hosting and upgrades are your job.
  • The ELTS price is not shown on the pages we checked.
