Publii

Free desktop app that builds static websites and publishes them to any host

/ 5

Our score

Publii is a free desktop CMS for Windows, macOS and Linux. You write and manage a site on your own machine, it generates static HTML, and you publish to the host you choose. There is no database, PHP or public admin panel.

Overview

Publii is an Electron and Vue.js app created by Bob Mitro and Tomasz Dziuda. You build the site locally and the app generates a static website. You then deploy it to Amazon S3, Google Cloud, Netlify, GitHub Pages, GitLab Pages or FTP. The published site needs no database, no PHP and no public admin.

Editors can use a block editor, a WYSIWYG editor or Markdown, with a settings screen for themes. The app is open source under GPL-3.0. A marketplace sells free and premium themes and plugins. Development is active: version 0.48.1 is the current download, and the 0.48.x release added multiple windows, a local preview server, a rebuilt WordPress importer and AVIF conversion.

Strengths

  • No server, database or public admin panel to attack.
  • Free and open source under GPL-3.0.
  • Built-in SEO tools, structured data, sitemap, WebP and AVIF output, and responsive images.
  • WordPress importer and privacy tools such as a cookie banner and Google Consent Mode v2.

Watch out for

  • Content is tied to the desktop app and the machine running it, unless you sync the site folder yourself.
  • Output is static, so dynamic features need plugins or third-party services.
  • Releases are still 0.x versions (0.48.1).

Pricing

What each plan costs and what the bill is counted by: seats, sites, usage or a one-off license. The bottom of each card shows what you pay on top.
