Strengths and watch-outs

From our review of each platform.

Decap CMS

Strengths

  • Free under the MIT licence, with a large community.
  • Works with GitHub, GitLab, Gitea, Bitbucket and Azure.
  • Built-in draft, review and publish workflow, and options for multilingual content.
  • Actively maintained, with regular releases.

Watch out for

  • Self-hosted setups need their own login and backend.
  • Large collections can hit GitHub or GitLab API limits unless you use Turbo.
  • Preview is a side pane built with React templates, not editing on the page.
  • Turbo is priced in euros and billed monthly only.

Sveltia CMS

Strengths

  • Free and MIT licensed, with no server or database to maintain.
  • Reads most Decap CMS configs, with migration guides for Decap, Static CMS and Pages CMS.
  • Strong multilingual support, with field translation through Google Cloud Translation or models such as Claude, Gemini and GPT.
  • Works with any static framework: Astro, Eleventy, Hugo, Jekyll, Next.js, SvelteKit and more.

Watch out for

  • Still on 0.x releases, although the team calls it feature complete.
  • No Bitbucket, Azure DevOps or Git Gateway backends.
  • Signing in several editors needs an OAuth helper, or a personal access token for each person.
  • AI translation needs each editor to bring an API key from a provider.
